tulgey

Down the Rabbit-Hole

Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?

DevLog #1 - In which a direction is decided

After the initial excitement receded, I was now left with a yawning chasm between myself and an inhabited, breathing Tulgey Wood. Some decisions had been made, I have a rough list of NPCs from AAiW, a working selection of locations suitable to the world but still with a Carrollian flavour, and a very strong sense of what the penultimate "encounter" would look like. But now, I feel like I am sitting in the quickly stream of Time (whom I am determined to remain on good terms with) in a rickety rowboat knitting with 14 needles the setting, layout and art .

I also feel a heavier sense of responsibility to the fans of AAiW. I don't think tulgey as it stands would be of any interest to Carroll. Presently, it only references his own work. There are no clever mathematical paradoxes, or satirical caricatures. I hope to entertain reader-players with the hidden references and sardonic twists of character and location to properly do homage to Carroll's genius but also acknowledge the more grounded context of the OSR style.

Tulgey is born of and borne by Cairn; there are liberties taken to stitch the two together. In the future, I may clone tulgey to the Pilcrow system when it is finished, but it will always have its roots [sic] in Cairn's play-style and philosophy. As Cairn continues to 2e, tulgey will branch away from the implied setting, but will always be compatible.

Finally, decisions on editions. Currently, there is a small treatment of the setting with NPCs, adventure hooks, and public domain art available for free on itch and drivethru. In the future, this will most likely change to a stricter adventure style player and narrator set of guides using the current art and tables. The paid edition will include more and more commissioned art, bigger tables, and tools for managing a breathing wonderlandish tulgey wood. This edition will initially be priced at $5 and gradually increase as further instalments are published.
